Abstract This book is a celebration of not only African music but of the synthesis and creation of a new music as a result of the Africans' presence in the Americas. This exhibit and its accompanying catalog and educational guide on North Carolina jazz musicians intends to bring public attention to the relevance of the hidden treasures found in the array of African musical instruments in the collection of the Mattye Reed African Heritage Center and to highlight the music of African Americans and its impact on early American music. Thus, this catalog does not merely provide an overview of the history of African American popular musical forms, but also shows how many familiar American musical scores and styles are indebted to the contributions of African Americans in the musical field. Some of the musical examples discussed in this catalog represent the early collaboration of African American and white American musical forms, such as minstrelsy, spirituals, ragtime, blues, jazz, gospel, ballads, rock and roll, and rap.
